Pitino names Jeff Mailhot as assistant coach

University of Minnesota head men’s basketball coach Richard Pitino announced Monday the addition of Jeff Mailhot to his staff as assistant coach. Mailhot has over a decade of college coaching experience, most recently serving in the same role at Iona College last season. “Jeff is a perfect fit for our program,” Pitino said. “He has advanced through all levels of basketball and has a proven reputation as a recruiter and hard worker. Gophers’ Motzko named Big 10 Coach of the Year

MINNEAPOLIS – Bob Motzko has been named the Big Ten Coach of the Year in his second season with the University of Minnesota, the conference announced on Monday as part of its year-end awards presentation. In addition to Motzko’s Big Ten Coach of the Year honor, Ben Meyers, Jackson LaCombe and Jared Moe were named to the Big Ten All-Freshman Team while Sammy Walker and Brannon McManus earned All-Big Ten Honorable Mention. University of Minnesota men’s basketball head coach Richard Pitino announced Saturday that assistant coach Ed Conroy has been elevated to the title of associate head coach. “Ed Conroy has been vital to our program’s success on and off the court since he has been here,” said Pitino. “He is a phenomenal recruiter and a terrific teacher of the game.  He has been integral in the development of our big men over the years. Gopher men’s hockey advances with 3-2 win over Notre Dame

MINNEAPOLIS – The No. 19 Gopher Hockey program punched its ticket to the 2020 Big Ten Men’s Ice Hockey Tournament semifinals with a 3-2 win over Notre Dame on Sunday night at 3M Arena at Mariucci. Minnesota rallied with two-straight wins in the best-of-three series to set up a single-game semifinal matchup at Penn State next Saturday. Minnesota (16-14-7) also rallied from a one-goal deficit in the deciding contest with three-straight goals in the second period. Gophers lose to Michigan; will open Big 10 tourney on home ice vs Notre Dame

MINNEAPOLIS – The Gopher men’s hockey team ended their regular season with a 2-1 loss to Michigan Saturday night, but will still get first round home ice in the Big Ten Tournament next week. The Gophers will host Notre Dame to open the  best-of-three quarterfinal series next weekend at 3M Arena at Mariucci. Saturday’s loss came after a scoreless first period, the two teams traded goals in the second period before Michigan (16-14-4 overall, 11-10-3-2 Big Ten) found the eventual game winner early in the third and then held on for the win. The Gopher men’s basketball team got 21 points from sophomore Marcus Carr including a gamewinning three pointer with three seconds to go as Minnesota went on to a 62-59 win over the Buckeyes in Columbus.
