Gopher men’s basketball at Illinois postponed

MINNEAPOLIS – The University of Minnesota men’s basketball game scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 7 at Illinois will be postponed due to COVID-19 health and safety protocols within the Golden Gopher program.   Minnesota and Illinois, along with the Big Ten Conference, will work together to identify possible rescheduling dates. Former Gopher Payton Willis signs with Golden State for NBA Summer League

MINNEAPOLIS – University of Minnesota alum Payton Willis has signed with the Golden State Warriors and will compete in the NBA Summer League. The Golden Gopher grad begins competition July 2-3 in the California Classic at the Chase Center, and continues action July 7-17 at the Thomas & Mack Center and Cox Pavilion on the campus of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.  Willis had his best point-production season of his collegiate career en route to All-Big Ten honorable mention honors in 2021-22. Gophers’ Carr named Co-Big Ten Player of the Week

Redshirt junior Marcus Carr has been named the Co Big Ten Player of the Week, announced today by the conference office. It marks Carr’s first Big Ten weekly award of his career and the first honor this season for Minnesota. The last weekly award dates back to Gabe Kalscheur and Daniel Oturu during the 2019-20 season. Carr produced his third 30-plus game this season and second in a row Friday against Iowa. The Toronto, Ont., native had 30 points against the then-No. 4 Hawkeyes when he went 6-for-13 shooting from 3-point range and eight assists. Gopher men crack top 25 for first time since 2017

The University of Minnesota men’s basketball team is currently No. 21 in the Associated Press poll released today. The poll marks the first time since Dec. 10, 2017 that the Golden Gophers have been ranked.  In all, nine Big Ten teams are currently ranked within the AP’s top 25. Wisconsin is ranked No. 6, followed by Iowa at No. 10. Rutgers (No. 14), Illinois (No. 15), Michigan (No. 16), Michigan State (No. 17), Northwestern (No. 19), the Gophers (tied at No. 21) and Ohio State (No. 25) are all ranked in the top 25. Pitino names Jeff Mailhot as assistant coach

University of Minnesota head men’s basketball coach Richard Pitino announced Monday the addition of Jeff Mailhot to his staff as assistant coach. Mailhot has over a decade of college coaching experience, most recently serving in the same role at Iona College last season. “Jeff is a perfect fit for our program,” Pitino said. “He has advanced through all levels of basketball and has a proven reputation as a recruiter and hard worker. University of Minnesota men’s basketball head coach Richard Pitino announced Saturday that assistant coach Ed Conroy has been elevated to the title of associate head coach. “Ed Conroy has been vital to our program’s success on and off the court since he has been here,” said Pitino. “He is a phenomenal recruiter and a terrific teacher of the game.  He has been integral in the development of our big men over the years.
