Gophers’ Motzko named Big 10 Coach of the Year

MINNEAPOLIS – Bob Motzko has been named the Big Ten Coach of the Year in his second season with the University of Minnesota, the conference announced on Monday as part of its year-end awards presentation. In addition to Motzko’s Big Ten Coach of the Year honor, Ben Meyers, Jackson LaCombe and Jared Moe were named to the Big Ten All-Freshman Team while Sammy Walker and Brannon McManus earned All-Big Ten Honorable Mention. St. Cloud State’s Ahcan signs with Boston Bruins

St. Cloud State University senior defenseman Jack Ahcan (Savage, Minn./Burnsville H.S.) has signed a two-year entry-level contract with the NHL’s Boston Bruins.  The news was announced on March 27 by the Bruins’ General Manager Don Sweeney. Ahcan completed his fourth season with the Huskies in 2019-20 and finished the year with seven goals, 18 assists and 25 points.  A 5-8, 184-pound defenseman, Ahcan served as a team captain for the Huskies in 2019-20. Gopher men’s hockey advances with 3-2 win over Notre Dame

MINNEAPOLIS – The No. 19 Gopher Hockey program punched its ticket to the 2020 Big Ten Men’s Ice Hockey Tournament semifinals with a 3-2 win over Notre Dame on Sunday night at 3M Arena at Mariucci. Minnesota rallied with two-straight wins in the best-of-three series to set up a single-game semifinal matchup at Penn State next Saturday. Minnesota (16-14-7) also rallied from a one-goal deficit in the deciding contest with three-straight goals in the second period. Gophers lose to Michigan; will open Big 10 tourney on home ice vs Notre Dame

MINNEAPOLIS – The Gopher men’s hockey team ended their regular season with a 2-1 loss to Michigan Saturday night, but will still get first round home ice in the Big Ten Tournament next week. The Gophers will host Notre Dame to open the  best-of-three quarterfinal series next weekend at 3M Arena at Mariucci. Saturday’s loss came after a scoreless first period, the two teams traded goals in the second period before Michigan (16-14-4 overall, 11-10-3-2 Big Ten) found the eventual game winner early in the third and then held on for the win. MINNEAPOLIS – The University of Minnesota and Gopher Athletics lost a legend on Saturday, Dec. 14, 2019 as former Gopher Hockey All-American captain and head coach Doug Woog passed away at 75. BUFFALO, N.Y. – For the second straight season, the Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs are the NCAA National Champions. COLUMBUS, Ohio – Rem Pitlick’s 100th career point with Gopher Hockey proved useful as the junior forward set up the game-winning goal on Saturday night in a 4-3 win for Minnesota, completing the road sweep over No. 2/3 Ohio State.
