Twins make it official, announce signing of Marwin Gonzalez

FT MYERS, FL – The Minnesota Twins announced today that they have signed multi-positional player Marwin Gonzalez to a two-year, $21 million contract. Over the last two seasons with the Houston Astros, Gonzalez has appeared in 279 games, hitting .274 (259-for-944), with 39 home runs, 59 doubles and 158 RBI while posting a .349 on-base percentage and a .817 OPS. Gonzalez, 29, played 145 games last season, hitting .247 (121-for-489) with 25 doubles, 16 home runs, 68 RBI, 61 runs scored, 53 walks, a .324 on-base percentage and a .733 OPS in a career-high 552 plate appearances. With a raucous crowd of 3,713 fans cheering him on, hometown favorite Jamal James (ranked #3 in the world in the welterweight division by the WBA) scored a technical knock out Saturday night over challenger Janer Gonzalez of Columbia. James, fighting at the Armory in Minneapolis for the third time in the last 10 months, won the fight when Gonzalez failed to answer the bell for the 7th round. Jamal James wins by TKO after 6th round

Minneapolis, MN  Ahead on the cards heading into the 7th round in his welterweight fight with Janer Gonzalez Saturday night at the Armory in Minneapolis, Jamal James didn’t need to fight any further as Gonzalez did not answer the bell for the 7th round. James ended round six with a flurry of punches that sent Gonzalez to the canvas for the first time. Gonzalez had won only won of the first six rounds and was a clear 10-8 loser in the 6th. In its third venture into the world of hosting professional boxing since the 1960’s, an announced crowd of 3.713 fans packed the Armory in downtown Minneapolis Saturday night. Eleven bouts are on tonight’s card including a World Title fight for the vacated WBC Super Middleweight belt between Anthony Dirrell and Avni Yildirim. The co-main event features Minneapolis native Jamal “Shango” James taking on once beaten Janer Gonzalez. The bouts are being televised live on Fox Sports One. COLUMBUS, Ohio – Rem Pitlick’s 100th career point with Gopher Hockey proved useful as the junior forward set up the game-winning goal on Saturday night in a 4-3 win for Minnesota, completing the road sweep over No. 2/3 Ohio State. St. Cloud State still #1 on heels of Saturday comeback
